| Date Assigned: | Mon Mar-5 |
| Date Due: | Mon Mar-12 |
By Thursday at the start of class (not at the end of class) each group of two must have two documents to submit rough drafts of the following:
1) A Web Page (or web pages) explaining computers and programming to
a 2nd-grade audience. In order to pass, you must at a minimum describe
how a computer works, what programming is, and how a program works, all
at a level that a 2nd-grader could understand. I would expect the
kids to know what a CPU and memory is when you are done, but not, for example,
what the Arithmetic Logic Unit is. Quality pictures would of course
help. The minimum submission, were it in an old-fashioned Word document,
would be at least 2 pages with normal formatting (this may lead to many
more web pages, however, if you tend towards "very hyperlinked" web pages).
I would hope that many of you would push well
beyond the minimum requirements and simply dazzle me with the incredibly
rich and profound educational material which 2nd-graders happily gobble
up. One hint: 2nd graders love interactive experiences, and do not
like to read volumes of text. This makes the problem both easier
(you have less to write) and harder (what you do write (and say, or sing,
or
whatever) has to be very compelling to a 2nd grader).
2) A PowerPoint Presentation of the same material, suitable for supporting a 15-to-30-minute presentation of this material to a 2nd-grade audience. Save your PowerPoint as both a ppt and as a web page (Save As HTML).
How to submit your assignment:
A) I will not accept any submissions which do not rigidly adhere to the submission spec.
B) Place #1 and #2 in the same directory (which may contain subdirectories, especially for the PowerPoint when saved as HTML).
C) In that same directory, add a file called "index.htm", and in that file, create a simple web page which lists the project name, your names, the date, and so forth, and then three links -- one to the web page or pages (assignment part 1) and two others pointing to your PowerPoint presentations (one to the ppt and one to the web page).
D) Finally, zip up the entire directory into a single zip file -- project.zip -- and email that zip file to me.
If you do not know how to do any of these steps, ask before Thursday class, as then the rough draft is due. Also note that the final draft is due a week from today (Monday Mar-12).
Good luck.
